Forum User Guide

These guidelines are intended to assist the smooth running of the forum for the benefit of all members.

Your participation in the forum indicates your acceptance of these guidelines.

If you violate these guidelines you are likely to receive an email reminder about them. If you violate them persistently your membership may be terminated.

Technicalities

  • The forum is a closed list. Only members may post messages.
  • The forum is not moderated, which means messages are sent immediately to the email addresses of all members.
  • If you hit "Reply" to a forum posting, by default it will go to all forum members. If you wish to reply to an individual rather than to everyone, please alter the "To:" address before hitting send!
  • When you do a post, or reply to a post, you will receive out-of-office replies from all members with that function turned on. This is unavoidable because the forum is an email-based system, and you are effectively sending an email to all members. However this only occurs for your first post or reply of the day.

What is the forum for?

  • To ask questions about workplace health and safety.
  • To answer those questions.
  • To discuss topical issues relating to health and safety.

What is the forum not for?

  • Promoting your seminar, conference or other event.
  • Promoting your course or qualification.
  • Promoting your product or service.
  • Promoting your job vacancy.

In other words, this is a non-commercial forum. If you wish to discuss promotion via Safeguard’s commercial print and online channels please contact our advertising manager Henry Kosima, ph 09 360 3727 or email: henry.kosima@thomsonreuters.com

Forum etiquette

  • Please include your name — this isn’t a place for anonymity.
  • Please be respectful — robust disagreement is fine, but rude, belittling or defamatory statements about other people or their opinions isn’t acceptable.
  • Please do not assume every forum member is as knowledgeable as you are. Some new members might have only just been given responsibility for health and safety.
  • Please respect people’s privacy: when describing a situation at a specific workplace, ensure no individual is identifiable.
  • Please don’t hog the forum — if you have been particularly active, give it a rest for a day or two.
  • When an active thread evolves into a conversation between only two people, and you are one of them, please take it offline. No one else is interested.
  • If your reply is personal and the whole forum doesn’t need to see it, be sure to change the ‘Reply To’ header to an individual email address. Otherwise your reply will go to everyone.
  • Please don’t stray too far off–topic. If you want to discuss world affairs (or politicians’ affairs), this isn’t the place.
  • If someone kindly offers something, please reply directly to that person's email if you want it. Don't just type "me too" and hit "reply" as that will go to everyone, which is tedious.
  • If you have a specific query and ask for help, a good practice is to ask people to reply directly to your email and promise to summarise the responses back to the forum in a day or two.
