THRESHOLD STATEMENT

WorkSafe NZ has said in a position statement that it will usually investigate claims of bullying and harassment only where there is a diagnosis of serious mental harm. It says in the last four years it has been notified of 125 cases of bullying, of which 11 were investigated, and 57 were referred to another agency or referred back to the PCBU to self-manage.

MINE PLANS

The first national online catalogue of mine plans – a recommendation from the Pike River Royal Commission – has been published following a three-year project.

LEADERS SURVEYED

The 2018 health and safety leadership survey, conducted by Deloitte Risk Advisory and the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum, questioned 138 company directors and executives from a range of public and private sector organisations. Questions covered leadership and governance, risk management, supply chain H&S, and worker involvement.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL

Fewer than half of 83 commercial fishing respondents use a sleep roster on their vessels, according to a fatigue survey by Maritime New Zealand. Just over half admitted to having made mistakes while fatigued; one-third had fallen asleep at the wheel of their vessel, and nearly half had made a bad decision.

NEW FULL MEMBER

Hazardous Substances Professionals New Zealand, an association of compliance certifiers, has joined HASANZ as a full member.

PUBLIC SECTOR REPORTS

New Treasury guidelines for government departments and Crown entities recommend that agencies consider including information about health and safety management in their end-of-year performance reports, focusing on critical risks and their management, worker engagement strategies, and H&S governance.

SCHOLARSHIPS LAUNCHED

HASANZ has launched an annual scholarship programme funded by sponsors to encourage further study in health and safety. General scholarships are open to people already working in H&S who wish to study for a diploma or degree, while post-graduate scholarships are open to people with degrees who wish to undertake post-graduate study in H&S. Applications for 2019 close on 26 October.

INNOVATION ROLE CREATED

WorkSafe NZ has appointed Daniel Hummerdal to the new role of Chief Advisor Health and Safety Innovation. Known for his advocacy of the Safety II or Safety Differently approach, he takes up his role on 1 October.
